A special needs
teacher through the Community Education Services of the
English Montreal School Board provides AVATIL’s community
education program.
Mission:
The goal of the community education program is to provide an
organized, coherent, relevant, dynamic program of activities based
on the Quebec Ministry of Education
objectives of the Social Integration Curriculum, tailored to the
needs of the AVATIL clients.
|
The community
education program targets AVATIL clients who are not involved
in an academic or vocational program, or steady employment
that meets their needs. The program can serve some clients
on a transitional basis, i.e. those between jobs or who are
being evaluated for AVATIL services. The program has a core
group of students attending on a full-time basis while some
attend on a part-time basis.
Objectives:
|
| Organized: |
a
program running daily from Monday to Thursday with a regular
schedule of activities |
| Coherent: |
activities
based upon sound objectives, flowing logically from
one to the next and reinforcing each other, leading ideally
to
personal development and improved independent living skills |
| Relevant: |
objectives and activities designed within the overall philosophy
and objectives of AVATIL, as well as the individual needs and
interests of AVATIL clients |
| Dynamic: |
hands-on
activities with purposeful "learning through doing",
as
opposed to static classroom academic lessons |

General
Description
Community
Kitchen: The core activity
of the community education program is the community kitchen. This
program provides participants with a number of benefits:
- It addresses
the issues of poverty and poor nutrition common among our clients
- Participants
benefit themselves by eating a free, nutritious lunch on a daily
basis. They may also purchase meals at a low cost to take home
- They prepare
and supply meals to others in the AVATIL community who want to
subscribe to this service
- They practice
basic skills in areas such as food and nutrition, literacy, math,
communication, and hygiene. The program also helps develop cognitive,
psychomotor as well as social and work skills
- They benefit
from regular, useful activity in their lives, leading to personal
development and mutual support. This is perhaps one of the most
important benefits to working in a group and belonging to a community
