Fay & John Bland Residential (40th Ave.) Transitional Living ProgramAvatil 40th avenue in Lachine

Mission: The program is intended to help its clientele achieve functional autonomy and become participating citizens in the community. The concept of mutuality, community and support networks are integral to the aims of the program.

40th Avenue, Lachine

Objectives: The program aims to provide a learning environment that will favor the acquisition of personal competence within a social framework. It promotes the development of one's own potential in areas that include the intellectual, the social, the emotional, the physical and the spiritual dimensions of their personality. The program embraces an experiential model for learning and strives to incorporate the dynamic process of participation in all of its methods, structures and approaches.

General Description: The transitional living program consists of three transitional apartments with a total capacity for 9 residents. A live-in building supervisor occupies the fourth apartment and provides support to residents Length of stay varies according to need. The average length of stay is 2 years.

  • A supper program Mondays-Thursdays between 5-7p.m. Residents have supper as a group. The residential instructor assigns residents to cook on designated evenings and helps residents develop cooking skills. The level of assistance provided is based on the skill level of each resident. Residents are also assigned cleaning tasks after supper.
  • A Residence Life Skills Group is held on a weekly basis. The group aims to assist residents in developing life skills such as nutrition, personal hygiene and money management. As well, residents participate in discussion groups and role playing with themes relating to areas of personal growth such as assertiveness, social skills, personal relationships and sexuality.
  • Residence meetings are held on a weekly basis in order to discuss the general functioning of the program, and issues or conflicts that need to be addressed. Residents are encouraged to participate in conflict resolution.
  • Apartment cleaning and grocery shopping take place on Saturday mornings. Residents are assisted by residential staff.
  • A number of social activities are organized with residents. Family members are invited to participate in special events.

Maison Kiwanis House

Mission: Maison Kiwanis House operates as a housing cooperative, and provides residents with low cost housing. It aims to provide a further transition to independent living. It can provide some clients with an additional transition period to that being offered at the 40th Avenue residence. It can provide clients who are experiencing difficulties living on their own with a respite period before returning to the community. For some clients living with their families, it may provide an alternative to the transitional living program or it can precede access to the transitional living program.
Objectives: A main objective is to provide residents with a supportive living environment in which to maintain their life skills. The average length of stay is 1-3 years. While the residence provides some structure, if encourages residents to assume a greater role in decision-making and in general a greater degree of independence than in the 40th Avenue transitional living program

   General Description: The residence has a total capacity for 6 clients. A coordinator, live-in animator and residence staff oversee the functioning of the residence. Residents participate in regular co-op meetings and are involved in the decision-making process. They are consulted in the development and implementation of residence rules and management of the residential fund. A supper program takes place 4 evenings/week, Mondays - Thursdays. Residents are responsible for cooking meals on designated evenings with the assistance of an instructor. A cleaning program takes place on Saturday mornings.

Goal planning meetings are held with residents and their families before they move to the residence. After one year, follow-up meetings are held in order to evaluate the residents' progress and assess their readiness to integrate in the community. Alternative residential options (for example, through a readaptation centre, or the mental health network) may be explored if independent living is not considered to be an option.

The residence benefits greatly from the generous support provided by the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore Montreal.

N.D.G. Co-op

Mission: The N.D.G. co-op is a residential alternative that enables residents to maintain their level of skills while they benefit from low cost housing in a supportive living environment. Its philosophy is based on a model of inter-dependence, where a balance is sought between the individual's right to a sense of personal autonomy, privacy and individuality and the sharing of a support system.

Objectives:

Avatil Bessborough co-op NDG
Bessborough Co-op, NDG

  • to provide a structured but flexible environment at an affordable cost;

  • to provide the supervision or support needed to individuals, who for medical, emotional or other reasons, have difficulty living independently;
  • to promote a supportive community through the ongoing development of common interests, goals and decision-making.
Many graduates of the AVATIL program progress to independent lifestyles. Yet for others, interdependent living has much more to offer in terms of quality of life.

General Description: The majority of members of the co-op have had a previous experience in the transitional living program or on their own (while in the AVATIL program).

Length of stay can vary between medium and long term but in principle to co-op does not offer permanent housing.

  • The co-op benefits from a live-in animator whose main role is to provide a supportive presence in the home.

  • A cook ensures that residents eat at least one balanced meal per day during supper. The cook works 3 days/week, prepares 5 evening meals, and is responsible for grocery shopping. Residents are assigned kitchen-cleaning duties on designated evenings.

  • A cleaning person is responsible for cleaning the residence's common areas. Residents are responsible for keeping their bedrooms clean, and for basic household maintenance. Staff is available on a weekly basis for residents who require assistance and/or supervision in the accomplishment of these tasks.
  • The residential coordinator ensures that the schedule of programs and activities is implemented. He/she acts as liaison with the live-in animator, the cooking and cleaning staff as well as AVATIL staff. He/she chairs co-op meetings with residents and promotes shared decision-making in areas related to cooperative living and management of the residential fund. The coordinator evaluates the residential program on an ongoing basis.
