General
Description
Services
for clients in the 25-40 age group:
Many of the
AVATIL clients in the 25-40-age category are living independently
in the community. Most of them have graduated from the transitional
living program and are now receiving community support services.

A number
of clients in this age group are busy with school/vocational
activities and may not consider maintaining contact with a
peer group to be a priority. Some clients may want to maintain
contact with others but have difficulty with their social
skills and in taking initiative. Others may be coping with
emotional problems and may isolate themselves in the community.
Two groups
have been developed for these clients. They are held one evening/week
on alternate weeks. Recent graduates of the transitional living
program form one group. Members who have been living in the
|
community for over
seven years form the other group. Topics for group discussions vary
and are based on the interests of the members.
A group has
recently been developed for their parents. Parents plan to meet
every 3-4 months. The meetings aim to provide parents with support,
information about our programs and activities and to encourage their
involvement.
COMITAS
- Services for older participants:
| Comitas
is a Latin word meaning kindness or civility. Comitas is a long-term
support program for older participants (aged 40+) of AVATIL.
It was initiated in 1996 through a grant from the New Horizons
- Partners in Aging program of Health Canada. This grant has
allowed AVATIL to explore a model that addresses the support
needs of its long term and aging participants who have evolved
through its services and whose natural support systems have
waned. |

As AVATIL participants
age, they face an increased risk for physical and emotional ill
health. While many live as independent adults, they are vulnerable
to extreme poverty, loneliness and exploitation. Many struggle for
dignity.

A sense
of belonging to a group and to a community
